José Hermano Saraiva (1919-2012), filho de José Saraiva, respeitadíssimo historiador e latinista, teve uma carreira variada e muito rica: foi professor liceal e universitário, advogado, ministro, embaixador e um brilhante investigador nas áreas do direito e da história. Membro de várias instituições académicas, é autor de uma obra muito extensa e internacionalmente reconhecida. Defensor do Estado Novo, não quis, depois de 1974, aceitar propostas universitárias fora do país, achando que o seu lugar era em Portugal. Abdulai Silá was born in 1958 in Catió, Guinea Bissau. He moved to the capital, Bissau, to complete his school studies and then to Dresden, Germany, to complete a degree in Power Engineering.

He currently lives in Bissau and combines telecommunications work with writing.

He is the author of four novels, A Última Tragédia, Eterna Paixão [Eternal Passion], Mistida [Mixed] and Memórias (Mantic Memories], all of which deal with Bissau-Guinean culture and history. He is the co-founder of the publisher Ku Si Mon Editora and he has also written a play, As Orações de Mansat [Mansat's Prayers], a Bissau-Guinean Macbeth.

Mia Couto was born in 1955 in Mozambique and is the most prominent writer in Portuguese-speaking Africa. He has been active as a journalist and during the revolutionary struggle headed the AIM news agency. He now lives in Maputo where he works as an environmental biologist and runs the Mozambique part of the Kruger National Park.

A Very Short History of Portugal is written by A.H. De Oliveira Marques.

Clarice Lispector was a Brazilian writer. Acclaimed internationally for her innovative novels and short stories, she was also a journalist. Born to a Jewish family in Podolia in Western Ukraine, she was brought to Brazil as an infant, amidst the disasters engulfing her native land following the First World War.

She grew up in northeastern Brazil, where her mother died when she was nine. The family moved to Rio de Janeiro when she was in her teens. While in law school in Rio she began publishing her first journalistic work and short stories, catapulting to fame at age 23 with the publication of her first novel, 'Near to the Wild Heart' (Perto do Coração Selvagem), written as an interior monologue in a style and language that was considered revolutionary in Brazil.

She left Brazil in 1944, following her marriage to a Brazilian diplomat, and spent the next decade and a half in Europe and the United States. Upon return to Rio de Janeiro in 1959, she began producing her most famous works, including the stories of Family Ties (Laços de Família), the great mystic novel The Passion According to G.H. (A Paixão Segundo G.H.), and the novel many consider to be her masterpiece, Água Viva. Injured in an accident in 1966, she spent the last decade of her life in frequent pain, steadily writing and publishing novels and stories until her premature death in 1977.

She has been the subject of numerous books and references to her, and her works are common in Brazilian literature and music. Several of her works have been turned into films, one being 'Hour of the Star' and she was the subject of a recent biography, Why This World, by Benjamin Moser.

Rui Tavares de Faria é Professor Auxiliar Convidado do Departamento de Línguas, Literaturas e Culturas da Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade dos Açores; e Investigador integrado do Centro de Estudos Clássicos e Humanísticos (CECH) da Universidade de Coimbra e do Centro de Estudos Humanísticos (CEHu) da Universidade dos Açores.

É licenciado pela Universidade dos Açores em Estudos Portugueses e Franceses e, pela Universidade de Coimbra, em Estudos Clássicos. Em 2009, doutorou-se em Literatura Portuguesa pela Universidade do Porto e, em 2023, em Estudos Clássicos, Ramo de Poética e Hermenêutica, pela Universidade de Coimbra. Em «A caixa preta» (tal como a anterior, a terceira história foi escrita em lugares diferentes, trocando mensagens, um autor acrescentando o texto do outro), gerações da mesma família são obrigadas a enfrentar os seus segredos mais bem guardados. As três novelas que constituem este livro têm por base peças de teatro escritas em conjunto pelos autores e encomendadas pelos grupos de teatro A Barraca, de Lisboa, e Trigo Limpo - Teatro ACERT, de Tondela. Porém, depois de conversas informais na bela e histórica cidade de Paraty, no Brasil, essas peças foram reescritas pelos autores sob a forma de contos. Dois dos maiores autores de língua portuguesa juntam-se para proveito e alegria dos seus leitores.

Autor

José Eduardo Agualusa nasceu no Huambo, Angola, em 1960. Estudou Agronomia e Silvicultura. Viveu em Lisboa, Luanda, Rio de Janeiro, Berlim — e, atualmente, divide o seu tempo entre Lisboa e a Ilha de Moçambique. Os seus romances têm sido distinguidos com os mais prestigiados prémios nacionais e estrangeiros: O Vendedor de Passados ganhou o Independent, em 2004, e Teoria Geral do Esquecimento foi finalista do Man Booker, em 2016, e vencedor do Dublin Literary Award. Toda a sua obra literária está publicada na Quetzal. Os seus mais recentes livros são o romance Mestre dos Batuques (2024) e a recolha de contos Quero Ser os Teus Domingos(2025).

Mia Couto, born in Beira, Mozambique, in 1955, is one of the most prominent writers in Portuguese-speaking Africa. After studying medicine and biology in Maputo, he worked as a journalist and headed several Mozambican national newspapers and magazines. Couto has been awarded numerous literary prizes, including the 2014 Neustadt International Prize for Literature, the Camões Prize (the most prestigious Portuguese-language award), the Prémio Vergílio Ferreira, the Prémio União Latina de Literaturas Românicas, and the FIL Literary Award in Romance Languages. He lives in Maputo, where he works as a biologist.

Autor

Lídia Jorge estreou-se com a publicação de O Dia dos Prodígios, em 1980, um dos livros mais emblemáticos da literatura portuguesa pós-revolução. Desde então tem publicado vários títulos nas áreas do romance, conto, ensaio e teatro.
Em 1988, A Costa dos Murmúrios abriu-lhe as portas para o reconhecimento internacional, tendo sido posteriormente adaptado ao cinema por Margarida Cardoso.
Entre muitos outros, são de realçar títulos como O Vale da Paixão, O Vento Assobiando nas Gruas, Combateremos a Sombra ou Os Memoráveis, obra que tem sido considerada como uma poderosa metáfora da deriva portuguesa das últimas décadas.
Aos seus livros têm sido atribuídos os principais prémios nacionais, alguns deles pelo conjunto da obra, como o Prémio da Latinidade, o Grande Prémio da Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores – Millenium BCP, ou o Prémio Vergílio Ferreira de 2015. No estrangeiro, entre outros, Lídia Jorge venceu em 2006 a primeira edição do prestigiado prémio ALBATROS da Fundação Günter Grass e, em 2015, o Grande Prémio Luso-Espanhol de Cultura.
O seu mais recente romance, Estuário (2018), recebeu o XXIV Grande Prémio de Literatura dst e foi finalista do Prémio Médicis 2019.
Em 2019, publicou a sua primeira obra de poesia, O Livro das Tréguas, e as crónicas que ao longo de um ano leu aos microfones da Antena 2 foram, em 2020, reunidas no livro Em Todos os Sentidos.
Ao conjunto da sua obra acaba de ser atribuído o Prémio Tributo de Consagração Fundação Inês de Castro.
