Julie Sando responds to the artifacts she finds while photographing storefronts and window displays. Specifically, she looks for representation that chronicle changes in cultural attitudes around gender, tourism and the natural sciences. With Nightshades at Saudade Toronto, there are references to the solanacea family of ornamental and medicinal plants and to common shades of hosiery. From a database of scans made from offset printed hosiery packaging and advertisements, Sando has inverted their original colours and removed portions of their textual information through a variety of analogue and digital processes. In doing this, many of the shared ideologies that underpin these commercial impressions are revealed.

“Nightshades” is a series of twelve photographs created by Julie Sando for Saudade Toronto and the Contact Photography Festival. Each photograph is printed on Fuji Crystal Lustre archival photographic paper and is hand signed by the artist. No more than 10 impressions of each image will be available to maintain exclusivity.

“The Atlantis canaries” is a piece that combines two distinct materials, faience and brass. The canary is coloured according to the use of the technique of manual painting to airbrush. The branches (oxidised black or simple golden brass), where they land, are unique, produced according to the process of casting sand mould.

Each piece is accompanied by fastening material, giving the possibility to fix it on a wall, or to suspend it for example on shelves with the help of a ballast. One piece or the set allows a wide range of positions.

The Naughty Crow is a representation from proper observation, glazed and decorated according to the tradition of using the manual technique of dipping and painting on glass and enhanced by two claws cast in natural brass (gold) or oxidized brass (black), according to the manual process of casting in a sand mould.

A purely decorative piece packaged in a box wrapped with a paper sleeve with an exclusive illustration and a unique poem “The Naughty Crow”, to pay tribute to the crow St. Vincent as an integral part of the history of Portugal.  04/25
