Julie Sando responds to the artifacts she finds while photographing storefronts and window displays. Specifically, she looks for representation that chronicle changes in cultural attitudes around gender, tourism and the natural sciences. With Nightshades at Saudade Toronto, there are references to the solanacea family of ornamental and medicinal plants and to common shades of hosiery. From a database of scans made from offset printed hosiery packaging and advertisements, Sando has inverted their original colours and removed portions of their textual information through a variety of analogue and digital processes. In doing this, many of the shared ideologies that underpin these commercial impressions are revealed.
A limited edition for Saudade Toronto, these 52-card decks are perfect for a game of poker or solitaire. Designed as a whimsical collaboration between Julie Sando, Saudade Toronto and American illustration and lettering artist Carolyn Sewell, these playing cards are printed on premium cardstock using plant-based inks.
