We're happy to be working with our local family-owned cork company to make these solid cork bowls. Designed to look as handsome empty as when they're filled with bits and bobs, each bowl is finished with natural beeswax for durability, and to also allow them to be used to serve dry goods (think nuts, etc). Interestingly, to get the cork to this rich dark coffee colour, the cork is actually 'cooked.'
25 years into its life, the bark of the cork oak tree is first harvested by hand, then after this the bark is removed every 9-10 years. Driving through southern Portugal you'll often spot trees whose bark has been removed, with a number painted on the trunk denoting the year when it can next be harvested.
