“It was drawing that led me to a career in architecture. My liking for the world of forms almost left me to take up sculpture, but soon I was fascinated by the control of space and light that invades it, helping to model it in a more subtle and unexpected way.
The world of drawing allowed me to discover the lines of strength that “structure” a (natural or urban) place and to understand better how to transform it or add to it new spaces or volumes, which may lead to the integrating or contextualizing attitudes that I have always deemed to be the most suitable.
I also soon discovered that, on its own, drawing was no more than a “tool” to decode other more subtle values. In this site or place to visit it was important to grasp that which many of us have become used to calling “The soul of the place” or the “Genius loci” of the place. This decoding results from each author’s sensibility and information, which is why it is important to study how different authors resolved the same programme for the same place.
Then there was the issue of the “method”, which was profusely transmitted to us by that great teacher Nuno Portas during his project classes in the late 60s.
Analysis, diagnosis, and synthesis, the three classic steps in scientific investigation, might be equally applied to defining the discovery of new architectural solutions, a given programme for a given place intersecting with each of those stages.”
